Track Five: City of Blinding Lights

In this weeks song, I will cover track 5, City of Blinding Lights. This has always been one of my favorite U2 songs. The song to me, expresses tones of regret, reflection, longing for love, appreciation for love, and leaving the old behind, and appreciation for what one has in life. As we approach this new year in terms of accountability, sometimes, as Christ has called us to do, we need to learn to die to self on a daily basis, we have to learn to walk unafraid. This is a challenge in our daily world. We can often feel as Bono so elegantly writes:

“Don't look before you laugh. Look ugly in a photograph. Flash bulbs, purple irises. The camera can't see. I’ve seen you walk unafraid. I’ve seen you in the clothes you made. Can you see the beauty inside of me?. What happened to the beauty I had inside of me?

And I miss you when you're not around. I’m getting ready to leave the ground.”

My hope this year, is that everyone can reflect and have the Lord prune the discontent that they are feeling within on a physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and financial level. That we start asking the tough questions of ourselves and others. We are entering a time where doing damage to ourselves and others can no longer fly if we are to survive as a church. We need to be the light for ourselves, and then carry that toward one another. That may require some tough discussions first and foremost with plucking the log out of our own eyes, but then by simply demonstrating the light to others daily and caring for ourselves in a very dumbed and numbed out world, that doesn’t have its priorities straight.

Enjoy the song City of Blinding Lights!
